Retz and surroundings
Where fine wine plays the leading role
In Retz and surroundings, the north-western tip of the Lower Austrian Weinviertel, the mild and dry climate allows the art of viticulture to flourish.
The conditions here have always been ideal for pressing high-quality grape juice. Fermented and matured in barrels, its flavour reflects the diverse, harmonious hilly landscape.
Wine culture has been a tradition here for many centuries. Simple-looking “cellar houses”, built into the loess soil along romantic cellar lanes, bear characteristic witness to this.
The Retzer region has a whole range of other wine-related attractions to offer, such as Austria’s largest wine cellar with multimedia show and the oldest barrel in Austria, the most beautiful wine cellar lane in the Weinviertel, wine shops, cheerful wine festivals and much more.

Retzer wine region
The Weinviertel Wine Route experience has many facets: 132 eventful kilometres connect the regions of Schmidatal, Retz surroundings, Pulkautal and Hollabrunn surroundings, opening up a landscape in which harmony and diversity become a feast for all the senses. Wine accompanies the route, especially Grüner Veltliner at a high level and in seductive variety.

Active in the Weinviertel
Sporty and ambitious or leisurely and relaxed – everyone gets their money’s worth around Retz. The options for exploring the region by bike are varied and, like the region’s wines, close to nature and well developed. But where you can cycle well, you can also hike well! For all those who want to feel the rhythm of the Weinviertel not just in their pedals but under their soles, there are of course just as many options.
